Susan Feez is a lecturer in the School of Education at the University of New England, teaching in the area of language and literacy education. She has worked as a classroom teacher of language, literacy and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) across the primary, secondary and adult education sectors, and as a teacher educator and curriculum consultant. She has also been involved in the writing of textbooks and curriculum documents, including working as a writer for the NSW Board of Studies during the development of the current NSW English K-6 Syllabus. Susan holds two AMI diplomas – Casa dei Bambini (Sydney) and Elementary School (Bergamo, Italy) – and has worked in a range of Montessori classrooms. For her PhD in Semiotics from the University of Sydney, Susan analysed the distinctive objects found in Montessori classrooms to investigate how these objects mediate educational meanings for young children. Her research interests include Montessori education, educational linguistics, curriculum design, literacy pedagogy and social semiotics.
