Feeling disenchanted with the rigid structure of the tradition classroom in St Albans where she worked after completing her teaching degree, Aileen Allen left full time teaching in search of a style she could relate to and align with.
She responded to an AMI ad in the paper for people interested in Montessori teaching, and soon after began her intensive training as the only student in her class! Completing her teacher placement at Montessori Kilsyth, Aileen accepted the position of Assistant Director in 1994. Upon relocating to Ringwood East, where the school was able to secure a suitable building in 1996, Aileen became the Directress and primary educator of Maroondah Montessori Pre-School.
From humble beginnings as the only AMI student in her year, Aileen's purpose has always been to honour and facilitate a true Cycle 1 Montessori program. Over the past 25 years, Aileen has helped shape the development of over 700 children and their families. Those who have had the privilege of experiencing Aileen and her program will attest to her authenticity, commitment and dedication to the philosophies and practices of Dr. Maria Montessori.
She has never taken any sick leave as she puts the children’s interests before her own. Aileen believes that minimizing adults' help to children is the key to help children grow into independence and develop problem solving skills. She patiently trains all the staff to stand back to help the children do the tasks themselves.
Aileen she is always courteous in a warm and inviting way, allowing others to ask questions without fear of being judged and without telling them what to do. Diversity and inclusiveness has always been a part of Aileen and how she interacts with everyone.
In 27 years commitment to Cycle 1 as the only AMI trained in-state teacher, one could say Aileen Allen is one of the Victorian Montessori community's most veritable graduates.
