Maths Workshop 6-12: Peter Erskine - WA

The Montessori Maths workshops will provide a map or overview of the entire Montessori 6-12 Maths journey including the transition from 3-6 sensorially based work through the increasingly abstract work of the Second Plane (6-12) environments. Presentations of Montessori materials will then trace 6-12 work relating to Long Multiplication, followed by a specific focus on the squaring and cubing activities leading up to and including the introduction to Algebra, and how this work relates to other aspects of Cosmic Education. This will provide a coherent sequence of Montessori maths activities for practitioners who are seeking to provide interest and engagement for 6-12 year old children within an authentic Montessori context.

In the Montessori 6-12 environment maths is presented as part of the story of humankind, as a window on the development of human culture and thought, presented along with language and geometry as another of the great gifts of humankind.

The teacher’s role is not to emphasise rules, information, and memorisation but to provide a relevant and meaningful context for the child’s own study of mathematics, to stimulate the imagination, to challenge the reasoning mind. To succeed in this the Montessori teacher needs a profound understanding that the child’s task is to construct herself, and that no one can do this for her.

“The secret of good teaching is to regard the child’s intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination. Our aim therefore is not merely to make the child understand, and still less to force him to memorise, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his inmost core.”
