Writing Workshop 6-12: Fiona Mackenzie - NSW
This workshop will assist teachers in Montessori primary classrooms to develop strong writing skills with their students. Participants will learn ways to encourage positive attitudes to writing, encourage creativity, and assist students to produce quality writing. Practical strategies will be shown and demonstrated that can be easily adopted in the Montessori classroom to scaffold the young writer.
We will look at ways to generate a volume of writing, how to provide guidance through drafting processes and writing within structures to publishing and presenting, using partnerships effectively, setting guidelines for editing, conferencing and giving writers feedback, setting goals and assessment. We will examine the use of mentor texts and learn how read-a-louds and writing about reading, can not only assist analysis of an author’s work, but increase the quality of students’ work.
The methods presented are drawn from a variety of sources, including the widely adopted methods developed at Columbia University through their Reading and Writing Project. Fiona will share resources from her extensive study of writing, which includes post-graduate studies at the University of Technology Sydney and her work assisting students to extend their writing skills in her Cycle 3 classroom.
