Maths Workshop 6-12: Peter Erskine - QLD
Montessori maths workshops will provide an overview of mathematics materials and activities in the 6-9 Prepared Environment with a particular emphasis on Numeration and the Decimal System, Fractions, Operations and Calculations with Whole Numbers, and the preparatory activities for Squaring and Cubing. If time permits the workshop will also look at some of the 9-12 work in these areas.
In the Montessori 6-12 environment maths is presented as part of the story of humankind, as a window on the development of human culture and thought, presented along with language and geometry as another of the great gifts of humankind.
The teacher’s role is not to emphasise rules, information, and memorisation but to provide a relevant and meaningful context for the child’s own study of mathematics, to stimulate the imagination, to challenge the reasoning mind. To succeed in this the Montessori teacher needs a profound understanding that the child’s task is to construct herself, and that no one can do this for her.
