Interim/Temporary Part-Time Principal for Montessori Preschool in Northern Beaches, Sydney

Karuna Montessori Preschool is seeking a dynamic and experienced temporary part-time 0.6FTE principal for immediate commencement to lead our School. This position has previously been a Teaching Principal role but has now been divided and you will be supported by a full-time Educational Leader and part-time Office Administrator in this non-teaching role.

Established in 1984 and operating out of beautiful premises in Narraweena on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Karuna is a small, nurturing, not-for-profit community School with a maximum enrolment of 30 students across the 3-6 age range. Reporting to a parent and community member board in the first instance, this position is ideal for someone who is reliable, trustworthy and passionate about early childhood education under the Montessori Philosophy. Karuna provides an authentic Montessori educational approach which centres on understanding and meeting the needs of the individual child, instilling a love of learning, a sense of wonder and developing each child’s confidence and independent learning skills. At full enrollment, there are 5-6 staff. The School operates between the hours of 8:00am - 4:00pm during school terms.

Key Responsibilities as Principal:

  • Work collaboratively with the ECT to manage the preschool, classroom and educational outcomes of the School in line with legislative requirements, association policies and procedures
  • Ensuring the School is compliant with the EYLF, NQS, NSW Education Standards Authority, and Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations
  • Oversee the educational program and daily operations of the School
  • Lead, motivate, mentor and support educators and office staff
  • Deliver consistent high-quality standards for pre-school and school age presentation and work practice
  • Develop collaborative relationships with children, families and the local community, including regular parent communication
  • Financial management and integrity of the service, in consultation with the Board
  • Maintain accreditation standards and ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff
  • Managing enrolments and waitlists
  • Adhering to the Montessori ethos of the School


  • A recognised Early Childhood Teaching or Primary Teaching degree approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA)
  • Ability to act as a Nominated Supervisor
  • Montessori Diploma (3-6 years old) from the Associate Montessori International (AMI) would be viewed favorably
  • Current Working with Children Clearance (WWCC)
  • Current First Aid, CPR & Asthma, Anaphylaxis
  • ACECQA approved Child Protection training or be willing to undertake this training
  • Have the legal right to work in Australia

  • Proven ability in all areas of administrative procedure, curriculum development, parent and community liaison, staff professional development, early childhood and primary education compliance and legislation
  • Ability to oversee financial operations of the School, presenting budgets and plans for future financial stability in consultation with the Treasurer

Remuneration and Benefits:

$150K - $160K 0.6FTE + super on a pro-rata basis as the position is part time at 0.6 of a full time load. Candidate’s exact pay rate determined on the individual's skills, experience and qualification. 

Days/hours to be worked by negotiation in keeping with the needs of the School. Flexible working conditions to promote work-life balance.

The role is temporary with a 1 year duration and the possibility of extension at the end of the term

The role is a full-time non-teaching position enabling the director to prioritise the preschool’s pedagogical, operational, and strategic development
