09:00 – 10:30 Talking Straight About Montessori Education

Every club has its own codes and language, and the “Club of Montessori” is no exception. Are we a “movement,” a “method,” or “education for the 21st century”? Montessorians know what they mean when they discuss “pedagogy” and “planes,” but does the language we use connect us or distance us from parents and other interested (sometimes skeptical) parties? How we talk about what we do makes a difference in how others perceive us and our work. This workshop will identify the unique terms that make up the Montessori vocabulary, and will explore ways to communicate Montessori concepts with more mainstream audiences. Working together, we will develop useful and accessible ways of describing our vision, methods, and values to parents, allies, and the broader community. Come prepared to think and contribute!

As Montessori schools become more complex, meeting the needs of children from 12 months old to 18 years old, the school must reintegrate itself as it works to embody a continuum of Montessori pedagogy spanning nearly two decades of life. To be comprehensive, the endeavour must encompass both the nature and culture that come to bear on human development. As institutions grow both in size and intricacy, faculty, administrators, and parents work to remain organic and community-centred while embracing the diverse needs of a widening spectrum of offerings.

Jennifer Davidson will share strategic planing and leadership experiences from the Portland Montessori community, specifically, the process of developing a wholistic vision for local organisations that also fits into the global Montessori movement. Topics covered include long range planning process, visionary leadership style, and setting one’s intention to accomplish the plan.
